David Owen Hastings

David Owen Hastings was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa, where his family encouraged his love for art. Hastings studied graphic design at the University of Iowa before moving to Seattle in 1985. He has a successful graphic design business as well as an art studio in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. “I’m one of the lucky few who get to combine passion with profession... design and fine art go hand-in-hand.” Hastings continued his education in printmaking at the Pratt Fine Arts Center and with Sev Shoon.

Hastings creates organic abstractions, inspired by nature and the elements, working primarily with print and collage techniques, monotype being his primary print medium. Hastings builds up rich layers by printing on translucent papers that are collaged together. Machine stitching is often used for added texture.

“I am constantly drawing connections between things, making ‘arrangements’, be they in daily life, the garden, or in my artwork. I also spend a lot of time considering harmonies, laying out my source materials as a tarot reader lays out cards... looking for inspiration, connections between the pieces, relationships. My imagery speaks of the abundant life energy radiated by nature.”
